Fish Decoys

Decoys are used during ice fishing to attract predator fish.
They have been primarily used in spearing but they are also used
to attract the curiosity of fish while hook and line jigging.

Decoy competition pieces differ from other types of sculpture in that
they must be functional as well as beautiful. First, they are viewed for
biological accuracy and coloring. Each one is then put in an aquarium
and tested for floating/sinking abilities. They are also checked to see how level they
float. The best ones are selected for a "swim" test in a large circular pool. The
"best" is selected from these after the judges try swimming them.
